Earlier trenching confirmed mineralised paleo-shoreline material and identified heavy-mineral-enriched laminations.
Whilst the main exploration is gold-focused, work has identified mineral sands containing garnet, ilmenite, zircon and monazite.
The placer deposits are richer in these heavy mineral sands than those found south of the Buller River, due to enrichment facilitated by the Buller catchment, which transports these heavy minerals to the coast, and the northward drift in the Tasman Sea.
